April 7, 2009 Dr. Loree Burns visits Loranger
To celebrate School Library Media Month we invited one of the Maine Student Book Awards authors, Loree Burns, to visit our school. Dr. Burns is the author of "Tracking Trash, Flotsam and Jetsam and the Science of Ocean Motion". You can read more about her on her website. Dr. Burns talked to the 4th and 5th graders about the process of writing a book in a presentation she called "What's Your Angle?" The students enjoyed seeing the books Dr. Burns read as a child and hearing about how she was inspired by one of her teachers to become a scientist.
The 6th and 8th graders heard about her research for "Tracking Trash" and learned a lot about the ecology of the ocean environment and how spills of unlikely objects threaten the creatures who live in the sea.
A Great First Year
Well, I have had a lot of fun in my first year at Loranger Middle School here in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Things have been very busy and working without an aide has made my job as the Library Media Specialist extremely challenging, to say the least.
Our first big activity of the year was the Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by the PTO.
We chose "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" as our theme and had fun dressing up as Wimpy kids the week of the book fair. Even the teachers got in the fun.
